Architecture of Old Mosul[

The architecture of the old city of Moussel:

Articles and objects were put in a small sealed jar and concealed when constructing a new  building. By doing this the Mousselines believed it is as if the house has a treasure (so their descendants would value it and wouldn’t forsake it easily, and ownership can be claimed if it is taken, as there was no estate registration). So ages later they became a trace of time. Those articles and objects (treasure) were found by whom performed renovations (my father found a jar of this type in the 1950s). It proves the antiquity of the buildings. Over the course of history renovations have been frequently done as probably as every twenty to thirty years or so, it depends on the type of the building. Having said that, however, the same technique and materials that were used since two thousand years ago were used until 1880s.

As the city was surrounded by walls and their citizens were chiefly craftsmen and women, they had to stay within it.So not many large vacant areas and plots for new buildings were available. But extensions and annexes and extra rooms were added to the main building even if it meant constructing above the alleys and passageways. It was done by making arched bridges (called Qintara. This makes the houses complex, in a way that would amaze you, and would make you just wonder, how it could come to be that they are in some cases inside each other with some perplexedly intricate network of alleys and labyrinth between them (that are unique to Moussel only among all other cities in the world) only a local person could find their way through the maze of the narrow alleys and passages. This explains how some small houses were built within other.

Note; since Arabic emerged—it came out from both Assyrian and Hebrew which were both spoken in Mousselin in the old days-- the mousseline dialect is pure Arabic with correct voicing and vowels . It is however unique and it is almost impossible to imitate by any other Arabic native speaker. Whereas the Mousseline tongue is strong enough to imitate any other Arabic dialect. It is affected by Hebrew and Assyrian. The letter (R) is pronounced as in French and also other complications that aren’t easy to explain. The letter (P) does exist.

Note2;Moussel alabaster is grey, dubbed as marble called pharish (the R is pronounced as in French), has more density than average alabaster, and to a certain degree is water resistant. Also it isn’t translucent or semitransparent and fairly hard rock. It was abundantly available at the north and western hills of Moussel and was inexpensive. It was an essential element and an integral part of building materials in the construction of Moussel architecture with limestone and brown gypsum.

The brown gypsum was used instead of cement. It was manufactured from desiccated limestone by strong heat in a furnace (Kur), then crushed. It is to producing gypsum powder. The powder consists of average unpurified gypsum and has a certain percentage of clay, and certain percentage of sand is added. It is an ancient industry.

To prepare the brown gypsum paste, it must be kneaded so fast in a basin with certain amount of water depending on where the paste is going to be used, so the blender man must be specialized and professional. It is done by hand using a shovel, a tool,--- its shape between a triangular spade and a flattened scoop with a single handle that is perpendicular on its surface, it is like a big flattened ladle---it is called in Arabic (mejrafa). The tool is to bring the powder to the basin by the blender man and to collect the paste while he is sitting on a small and low wood cushioned stool at the opposite side of the basin with his legs wide open and with his knees slightly upwards and part of the basin is in between them with the basin is in a slightly inclined position toward the heap mass of powder.

The blending must be quickly done otherwise it spoils, no more water is added to it after mixing, and no more blending, or the paste will lose its strength. So the amount of gypsum that is added to the amount of water must be precise.  Also the brown gypsum must be added to the water in a manner as if sowing the powder---disseminated evenly over the water--- by the palms all over the water in the basin. The parched paste hardens solid in less than five minutes. To extend the hardening time up to two minutes more, a little more water is put initially in the basin before adding the gypsum powder to it, or, less amount of gypsum powder is spread over the water to the same usual amount, but this at the cost of its solidity, this must be done before mixing. The mixing is done by both hand in fast circulating movement. The mixture of water and the brown gypsum produces heat during the blending process and it must be done only once. This makes the brown gypsum paste hard. The time from the blending basin to the hand of the mason, it must take less than 5 minutes especially when it is for constructing the dome. It is quite a job. The moist paste ought to be able to form a spherical shape that can be handed over to the mason builder by the builder's promoter.

I personally grew up in the old city of Moussel, and my primary school in 1960s was there. It was a very old building. It must have been renovated for so many times, but the design of the main structure and the alabaster pillars probably were as original as they were first built. The floor was consisted of alabaster slabs, parts of the walls at a height of one meter and corners were alabaster as well.

Another building was a church with a big chamber with relatively high dome, it was connected by a corridor that leads to a courtyard fairly big, about 30 meters in length and about 15 meters width, had a small garden in the yard and a big limestone hollowed out as a tub, this was common at fairly big houses to store water. One of sides was a two storey building comprises of six average size rooms on each floor, and with an arcade way of about 3 meters width in front of them along the whole building. On the other side, the 15 meters one, there was a basement-- a typical Moussline basement design-- about 1.5 meters below the ground level and its ceiling was nearly 2 meters above the ground level, had a few small windows towards the yard. As any typical big Mousseline house, at one end of the basement there was another low door that takes you down to a cellar. The cellar had a ventilation and lighting opining up to the yard, it was protected against water and rain. The cellar had two more exits, one to the yard and another one to the alley outside. It was a typical cellar of big houses, similar to that in my primary school. On the upper floor of the basement there were two rooms and an arcadehall like a porch between them (called Eiwaan), this is typical like any other house in old Moussel. The basement had many big alabaster pillars and were arched on top, as any other pillars design of old buildings. It was in many aspects identical to the building of my school.

For the limited area of the city, there were no major huge buildings, apart from the big Mosque of Noori-ideen-Zenki, built in 1171 AD it does exist until today, that is to give the city an Islamic feature .

The typical house of Moussel

The average old moussel house was consisted of a big basement with two rooms on top of it and a porch-like space in-between them called Eiwan, a yard --- the big one has a small garden in the middle with olive, grape, and a fig tree---, a cellar has an entrance from the basement and has an exit to the yard and some of them, in big houses, have another exit to the alley as well - used for storing provisions of every kind, that would be sufficient for a year- and also one or two more rooms in one of the corners of the yard with a porch and above it there is a cranny-like,is called Ekhshim, another small room usually under the stairways for storing dry wood and zoological fuel. The houses are usually of two storey building. The main entrance of the house is roofed and usually next to a room in the yard and on top of the entrance roof there is a toilet--- it is linked from the outside with the waste pit by pieces of earthenware pipes fitted in each other to reach inside the pit that covered by a hardened lid, it is dredged every few years by a dredger man, it is done by adding ash and sand to the waste so it turns into fairly sold organic matter then extracted manually by a basket tightly netted and carried on jackasses to manure the land, mainly planted with fig, grape, pistachio trees, to the south of the city. Other crops are brought by farmers and peasants from around the city. (the Mousselines used toilets and water from the ancient times).

The basement floor and the walls lining at a height of up to one or two meters are usually of a layer of alabaster slabs. For draining water if flushed for cleansing or spilled in the basement, a big jar is embedded in the floor near the exist with a thick hard wood lid to collect the water and bailed out by a big scoop or a bowl, called Tassa(in our dialectTassi) (the [T] pronounced thick in both cases. The yard floor is of rocks and gravel and brown gypsum. The ally floor of rocks and gravel as well.

The openings of all doors and windows have frames of alabaster. The windows are shielded with grid of iron bars. All doors openings have a threshold stone of alabaster that must be crossed when entering. Also it prevents water and draught from getting in, it makes the door be tightly closed.

The outer walls of the houses are attached with each other. The houses are assembled next to each other in a small area called place, Mah7alla, (in our dialect Mh7alli, emphasis on, ll ,it is stressed ), it is a smallquarter (smaller than neighborhood). In the Mah7allat (plural) (in our dialect Mah7ieliel ), there are H7araat(plural) – the H7arah(singular) is a yard surrounded by houses with one or two dead end passages that lead to houses. The gate of the H7arah in some cases has Qintara with a house or extension of it above it. The Mh7ieliel are separated by alleys, some of them are very long. Each alley has many bends, turns, sub- alleys and passageways that constitute a web of passages. Some alleys have dead end. Each Mh7alli has several alleys and passageways. There are, however, two or three main streets that are relatively wide, lead from the gates of the city to the marketplace, (the oldest gate is Bab-ligish, south of the city and bab-sinjaar to the west, the word bab means door or gate. [like Bab,ylon]). The alley is called 3owji , a'owji  ] it means a bend (the plural is 3owjaat). The old Moussel constituted a network of perplexedly intricate alleys and passages, labyrinth, that would baffle you. They are actually a maze that NO stranger could tell their way, not even a Mousselline from just another Mh7alli unless has previously been there.

The water is brought on donkeys by the waterman and stored in a big basin or jars for general use. In summertime, washing clothes and bathing are done by the river. In wintertime, they are done at public baths that spread around the town.

Compressed snow  is brought to Moussel as ice from the mountains in the beginning of spring, stored in thermally isolated pits, called Zim-maitah (cold place). The ice is used in summertime to cool drinks. Drinking water usually put in jars and cooled by air, due to evaporation of the water that oozing out. written by SY Al- Hanoon 194.127.108.144 (نقاش) 10:45، 31 يوليو 2022 (ت ع م)ردّ

Description of Ancient Nineveh[

Description of Ancient Nineveh;

The Ancient Nineveh was a wealthy, developed, and exceedingly great metropolis. It was strongly fortified on every side, bidding defiance to every enemy, yet it was utterly destroyed. It had many resources as it was on the main highway between the east and west. Its population census, at the times of Jonah or Younisin around 850s - 830sBC, was far more than a hundred thousand, this is an indication of how great it was at its time.  Jonah, came from Damascus– after he was ordered to go to the  ancient city of Ninevah  to call the ancient  Assyrians to change their ways . He was from the clan of Ephraim which the ancient Assyria was not in anyway had come to terms with Ephraim. So  Jonah was reluctant to go. He tried to escape the undesirable  mission, so instead he went to  Lebanon shores and embarked a cargo ship in the Mediterranean Sea, probably was bound for Greece. After sailing, she encountered a storm and she was about to sink, so the crew threw the cargo in the sea trying to keep the ship afloat. Then Jonah declared that it was him that he was the cause of this storm. Therefore in an attempt to rescue the ship and those who were on board, he threw himself willingly in the sea. But promptly as he submerged in the waters he was swallowed by a great whale, seen by those were on board, and immediately the storm stopped. And after being in a very tight dark room,  the whale’s stomach, he remained breathing by the air current of the whale’s air passageway. He remained in the whale’s stomach for the whole night in (a three darkness, the night, under the waters, and inside the whale’s stomach, as it had been described). Then in the next morning, after his clothing and his skin were  consumed and digested in the whale’s stomach, he was ejected out from the whale at a deserted shore in Lebanon, unable to stand or walk or move anything of his body. He immediately was wrapped up with pumpkin plant leaves that grew under and around him almost in no time (as a supernatural event) to protect him and to be cured of his ailing body, while he was motionless for so many days. The plant supplied him with moisture and nourishment until he was fully recovered. He learnt a lesson the hard way. Then he set out for a journey to the ancient Ninenavah. It refused to answer his call and rejected him. BUT just before it was too late, it answered. He thought, at first, his sojourn in Ninenavah would be only for a while, BUT he became one of their dignitaries that everything he said was obeyed,  and he had to stay until he passed away after nearly 20 years and was buried in a raised courtyard, until today his tomb rises 20 meters above the adjacent ground and was never removed even after the ancient Ninenavah  reverted to its old ways two generations later nor when it was utterly  destroyed, his tomb was never touched, but only by one group in 2015….Not  long after Jonah,  when the ancient Assyrians became the most powerful nation in the whole region, and even took Egypt, and took the northern  part of the Levant and brought its people to their land in 721-718BC and resettled them, the majority of Ephraim clan at a plateau across the river opposite the ancient city of Ninenavah, for they were skillful and manufacturers of almost everything including textiles and had skills of iron industry learnt from David.

Ninenavah extended about 15 miles alongside the eastern bank of the river Tigris and breadth of 6 - 7 miles to the east. It was situated in the north east of Mesopotamia. The ruling aristocracy, army generals, the elite and rich people lived within its great inner walls of about 7 miles length, and 3 miles breadth from the river the western branch (the main). The eastern side of the walls were built as two parallel great walls with the eastern branch of the river Tigris flows a alongside between them near the inner wall and met south of the city. Another river rises from a spring 30 miles to the north east called Khousser flowed  and still flows  through the walls into the main body of the city. Water surrounded the inner walls. Tigris was a great river then. There was only one wall from the western side alongside the river. The inner walls today after being demolished are mounds as hills.  The river split into two branches 20 miles to the north of the walls. One flowed 7-8 miles to the east, and met again south of the city. The outer margin between the inner walls and the river was just 100-150 yards. So all Nineveh as a whole constituted an island of about 28 miles in length and 7-8 miles in breadth with a smaller river (Khousser) went from east to west poured in Tigris. The area from the river separation to the northern side of the walls supply the city with just about everything needed for sustenance. So how could then the joint forces of the Babylonians, Medes, and others, overcome the city? The basin of the eastern branch still exist today as a brook. Sadly it hasn’t been preserved, and much of it has been continuously, for the past sixty years, filled up with rubbles and wastes. Therefore  the ancient city was actually invincible and almost impossible to siege, or in worst case it would survive any blockade no matter how long it might last, that was in addition to several castles scattered around the city as vanguard forces to defend it. In about 640-30sBC, Nahum, one of those in the diaspora, believed from a town at a foot hill near mount Elquosh 30 miles north of Moussel - warned Nineveh; to give up their ways or they will take the blame. The Assyrians must have felt too powerful in everything. He, Nahum, also Gerges, both  delivered a message of admonition, warned them. In 633 BC the Assyrians began to show signs of weakness, and subsequently in 625 BC, the Medes , started a series of attacks on the Assyrians. In the end, in BC 615 they reached Nineveh. Then it was utterly  destroyed in BC 609….. HOW? The joint forces set their camps 15 miles to the south-east of the city on a slightly raised ground. Failed attempt to storm the city must have been made. But in the end they found a way. That was to flood the city with water. They brought gravel, rocks and clay from the nearby mountain to the east and started building an embankment outside the walls and obstructing the flow of Tigris to raise its level to a point that would inundate the city, and that what happened three years later. After removing the obstructions, the waters receded and the city was stormed, destroyed. Until today the remnants of the rocks and gravel of which with the embankment was built cover an area slightly rises above the adjacent plain in the south east of Moussel it isn't fit for anything as it has rocks in contrast with the surrounding ground. The castle at the plateau on right side of Tigres  was left empty. So the settlers at the plateau  inherited that the land and founded their own town, Moussel . Gergesa or  Georgeus, his tomb still in the city.
