'''The 1st Amman Opera Festival'''

The Amman Opera Festival (AOF), the first opera festival in the Arab world, was launched in July 2017 as an initiative of Jordanian soprano Zeina Barhoum under the Royal Patronage of HRH Princess Muna Al Hussein. The first edition of the festival featured a full operatic production of Verdi's La Traviata held at the 2000-year old Roman Amphitheater in Amman, Jordan.

The first performance witnessed the attendance of HRH Princess Muna Al Hussein, who is the Royal Patron of the festival in cooperation with the Embassy of The People's Republic of China, Embassy of France, Embassy of Italy, Embassy of Ukraine and Embassy of Georgia along with public figures and artists from Jordan.

Alongside over 150 international musicians and dancers from more than 10 countries, the show starred Zeina Barhoum as Violetta, Andres Versamendi as Alfredo, Simon Svitok as Germont and Ady Naber as Gastone, accompanied by the Sichuan Philharmonic Orchestra, featuring musicians from La Scala and local talent and musicians, and the Batumi Opera House Choir led by Conductor Lorenzo Tazzieri.

Prof. Alessandor Cavanna, principal of the I.M.S. Liceo Sandro Pertini (Sandro Pertini State High School), translated La Traviata from Italian to English through its student Erica Marrone under the supervision of her teacher Monica Baracchini, pianist and project manager Alberto Macri, the Associazione Culturale Euritmus (music institute of the Italian city Rovereto) and the Progetto Opera, which cooperated in forming the technical group (stage manager and his assistants), and Klaus Broz, artistic director of Euritmus and lead cello player of the orchestra.

This initiative aims to plant the seeds towards growing the opera culture in Jordan and the Arab world, in addition to trying to inspire the idea of constructing an opera house that would be built specifically for that purpose in Amman, in line with what has already been achieved in other Arab countries, such as Oman and the UAE.

The Amman Opera Festival is supported by the Greater Amman Municipality, with the Strategic Partnership of The Ministry of Tourism and Jordan Tourism Board, Embassy of The People's Republic of China, Embassy of Italy and Embassy of Georgia in Jordan with Royal Jordanian Airlines as the official carrier. The official hotels include Marriott, Rotana Towers, Arjaan Rotana, The Sheraton and Crowne Plaza.

'''Backstage Crew'''

With the their extensive Broadway experiences, set designers Laith Qattan and Tala Said has set up a unique set design that fits the bohemian style of the show. They created 3D designs for a cafe and a tavern, which was challenging for them because it required a bigger stage. They also spent so much effort to come up with a simple set design to match the show’s style and theme. This was made possible through the festival's support by providing them with the necessary budget to supply the designers with all the tools they need in order to come up with a groundbreaking show.

One of the challenges that faced the backstage crew was not having enough space for changing rooms, and as a solution, the team has decided to set up a big tent with changing rooms and a space for props and costumes for the opera. The theater will also be prepped for the stage set two days prior to the first show, along with the audio and technical equipment.
