The "school" mentioned above is the former St. Anthony's Catholic School. Note the cross on the top of the building. At one time it housed the Church and the school. Students were taught by the nuns of the Franciscan order. I attended school here from 1950 through 1955. The top floors were for 6th through 8th grade. First and second grade classs were taught in the basement. The middle classes, 3, 4th and 5th were taught on the same level as the entrance to the church. The church itself extended a good distance out the back of the school. The basement of the church served as a lunch room for students. During the time that I attended school there, we had a hot lunch program. Meals were 20 cents and included milk (chocolate or white). My two aunts were the chief cooks. At Christmas time, the lunch room was transformed into an auditorium. The big wooden serving counters were removed and the area opened up into a stage. A large backdrop screen was lowered and hid the stoves and sinks used in cooking. Here, many Christmas pagents were performed by the children of the school for teh enjoyment of their parents who sat on wooden chairs in the lunch room/auditorium.

Looking at the buikding from the front, one can see a door at street level on the right. This door opened to a stairway that led down stairs to the second grade classroom and up to the church level. A like entrance was on the left with stairs leading down to the first grade level. The middle double doors led up to the church level and other classrooms. It was about 15 to 20 steps to church level, so when there was a funeral, the pall bearers really had to work to carry the casket up the stairs and into the church. A new church was constructed in the past 20 or so years and is located about a block away.
