She was asked togive her opinion upon the subject of the proposed femi-nine exodus to the north. ADVICE TO WOMEN. What advice would I give to a woman about goingto Alaska? she said pleasantly. Why, to stay away, ofcourse. Its no place for a woman. I mean for a womanalone; one who goes to make a living or a fortune. Yes,there are women going into the mines alone, there werewhen we came out, all with the hope of getting big pay.Its much better for a man, though, if he has a wife along.Whatever stories of miserable living and excessive hard-ships there are, are about the poor fellows who had notsufficient outfit or suffered by their own poor cooking. 154

After a man has workedhard all day in the diggings he doesnt feel much like cook-ing a nice meal when he goes to his cabin, cold, tired andhungry, and finds no fire in the stove and all the foodfrozen. CLOTHES SUITED FOR THE TRIP. I took an outfit of clothes made especially for the trip.I got everything of the best material, and found it paid inthe long run. One doesnt need a great deal, and it isbest to take no more than is actually necessary on accountof the trouble and expense of carrying the things. Myoutfit cost about $250. It included three suits of every-thing, right straight through. I had very heavy woolen underwear and knittedwoolen stockings. My skirts were made short, only alittle below the knee.
