Theformer god, whom I must take, for various reasons, to be the same asXolotl in the Borgian codex, page 29 (a, figure 9), wears on his left arma shield, which has a hand as its emblem, and the ends of his loin clothare also painted with large black hands. Xolotl is a figure which orig-inated in southern regions, and may possibly represent fire rushing downfrom heaven or light flaming up in the heavens.
