الطائفة

عادةً ما تشير كلمة الطائفة في الاستخدام الشائع إلى قصة أو مجموعة معينة تعد معتقداتها أو ممارساتها غير طبيعية أو شاذة. ويدل أصل الكلمة على نظام ممارسة الطقوس الدينية. تم استخدام الكلمة في بداية القرن السابع عشر للدلالة على التبجيل الموجه إلى الإلوهية والمستمد من كلمة culte الفرنسية أو cultus اللاتينيةطوائف، بمعنى "التعبد" من cult-، ‘inhabited, cultivated, worshipped,’ ومن الفعل colere، والذي يعني "قلق، رعاية".^{[بحاجة لمصدر]}

في الثلاثينيات من القرن العشرين، أصبحت الطوائف موضع دراسة اجتماعية في سياق دراسة السلوك الديني. وقد تعرضت لانتقادات من المسيحيين الموجودين في هذه الآونة بسبب معتقداتهم غير القويمة. وفي السبعينيات من القرن العشرين، نشأت الحركة المناهضة للطائفية، حيث تحركت بشكل جزئي بسبب أعمال العنف وغيرها من الجرائم التي يرتكبها أفراد بعض الطوائف (على وجه الخصوص أسرة تشارلز مانسن و معبد الشعب). كذلك، اعترض علماء آخرون على بعض الدعاوى في الحركة المناهضة للطائفية، مما أدى إلى زيادة الخلافات.

وأدى رد فعل الحكومة اتجاه الطوائف إلى نشوب خلافات. وظهرت الطوائف أيضًا في الثقافة الشعبية.
