Mini biography

Hassan Assiri was born on the year 1967. He is married and a father of three kids. He contributed in changing and developing the dramatic art in Saudi Arabia and the gulf. As he succeeded in improving and empowering the big change in the form of drama in various branches and trends. Especially when he started tackling issues which is close to what is happing in the society by removing the cover from those angles which is called “ taboos “. As one of the first issues which was tackled by him is one of the major topics under a lot of discussions in Saudi Arabia is women’s right. 

Hassan Assiri had a great contribution to the Saudi and Gulf Drama; In addition, he made a great influence to it as well. He succeeded in initiating the Saudi and Gulf drama with its new shape and took the drama out of stereotyping into a newer and more realistic image. Assiri had a huge influence upon the Gulf Drama through bringing the dark and “Taboo” issues into spotlights. He dealt with the case most discussed through Saudi society and media on daily basis which is Women Rights.

Contemporary Cases

Assiri believes that Women are the most important base in the society. Accordingly, most of his Drama based on women issues. As a matter of a fact, he presented realistic tales and different incidents in unusual image of women. Showing their pain, persecution, oppression and social chains (i.e. social not religious) which most of Saudi women suffers from; such as: Women driving, not having the freewill to choose her husband but being forced to and all the other treatment that results from looking down to women and marginalize them as well from their main yet important role in society.

Drama Defenses Women

 Assiri was able to change the society perspective toward women through his daring yet true drama.He gave a pretest vision about the society treatment toward women and took her out of stereotyping and jumped over the walls of traditions and that grabbed a high percentage of the Arabian audience toward his dramas. One of the best dramas ever that was curved in the audience minds is “Aswar”, this drama took him to the universal festival the Emmy’s in 2007. Aswar has been showed for 15 minutes time in the festival.  This very work is considered as the first work from Arabian Gulf countries that is rewarded in an international festival and received an international Award as the Emmy's. However, Mr. Assiri has presented a brief speech about the series and considered the importance of the women role in Saudi Arabia in her strong influence in Saudi and emphasized on the significance of "Hejab" for any Saudi woman. This speech was presented for 600 people in that festival. Nevertheless, Aswar continued to be in the spotlights and interest in which Assiri had the “Creativity” Award as best social work that showed the negative treatment of the husband to his wife in the Gulf Festival for Radio and Television at its 10th session in Manama, Bahrain.  

“Assakinat fe qolubina” … Focuses on Women Assiri continues defending women rights with transparently; in addition, he initiated a brand new idea in the Arabian drama through “assakinat fe qolubina” series which includes several subtitles of 40 different T.V films. Now it is being displayed weekly on MBC channel and has become the matter of discussion in every home. This work focuses on dealing with women issues specifically also tries to present the negative treatment that women receive from the people around them; such as: their mothers-in-law … etc. The audience noted at once the transparent and direct interaction of the series with the fact they are living, also media started talking about “assakinat fe qolubina”. Although the Gulf drama is conservative enough and has many rules about not crossing the red line, assakinat fe qolubina brought it up and uncovered all the issues yet without showing any shamefulness. The work did not show the women as a body but showed her as a victim of a merciless society.
