Rose Papasian

للترجمة:[2][عدل]

Rose Papasian was born in Alexandria, on the 30th of January 1935. Her maiden full name was Rose Hagop Shahbenderian.

On the 2nd of November 1952 she got married in Cairo to Eugene Papasian, Junior. Since then she lived in Cairo till September 1964, when she moved with her two daughters Christine and Sima to Geneva in Switzerland, to join her husband who was already there since 1962.

Being inclined towards art, from early 1953 and for several years she studied under the guidance of Ashod Zorian, who was operating a private studio.

Her 1st success occurred in March 1956, when she won the 1st prize in an art competition held in Cairo for female artists under the age of 25.

In May 1958 she participated by 5 of her works in the great group exhibition of works by Armeno-Egyptian of works by Armeno-Egyptian artists, held in the Museum of Fine Art in Cairo. On that occasion that same museum bought one of her works.

From the 1st to the 8th of April 1961 Rose Papasian exposed her works in abstract style along with Joe Egoyan (who also painted abstract works at that time) in the Museum of Modern Art, Cairo.

Probably her last participation in a group exhibition occurred in 1962, when she exposed 4 of her abstract compositions in a group show, again by Armeno-Egyptian artists, held in Cairo during 27 January to 7 February of that year.

During two days, on the 4th and 5th of June 1963 she exposed 22 of her canvases in AUC (American University in Cairo). This was her 1st solo exhibition.

The main claim of originality in this exhibition was her series of paintings titled “Nubian Woman”. There were also some Flowers Scenes and Compositions.

In this exhibition she showed her return to Figurative art on a realistic basis, and her delicate touches were praised by many art lovers and art critics.

The culmination of her artistic activities in Egypt occurred when she held her 2nd solo exhibition in Akhenaton Gallery in Cairo.

This successful art gallery was established and directed by artist Hasmig Ballerian (known in art circles as Yasmine) since the 17th of December 1963 till January 1966.

In this exhibition Rose exhibited a series of her abstract works, during 17 to 19 of February 1964 (“Arev”, the issue of 18 February 1964, page 4).

Rose Papasian immigrated to Switzerland in September 1964.

Unfortunately, today we don’t know the details of her artistic life in Europe. We known only two facts; that in May 1983 she exposed her works in Geneva, alongside with two other artists (Arev, a short communication on the page 1, the issue of 31st of May 1983), and we know also that being hit cancer she died on the 23rd of February 1987.

On the 30th of June 2009 her two daughters Christine and Sima donated to AGBU-Cairo three works by their beloved mother. A nice Swiss landscape and two abstract compositions.

It is worth mentioning that in 1957 the great cartoonist Alexander Saroukhan created a beautiful caricature of Rose Papasian.

Rose Papasian was undoubtedly was one of the most talented disciples of Ashod Zorian, but compared to most other disciples of this master, she was the least influenced by him.

Her works were manifestations of a sensitive artist with a delicate touch. Her creative approach being dualistic, she created figurative as well as abstract works of art, and maybe this uncommon phenomenon was due to her strong desire to be modern “a la mode”, yet at the same time she was justly convinced that figurative art was never exhausted as an artistic reflection of objective reality.

Concerning originality, her series of Nubian Women can be considered today one of her most important achievements. Alas, unfortunately nature being pitiless, her artistic career was interrupted prematurely.

Today she is remembered as one of the most talented Armeno-Egyptian artists of the 4th generation, which was the generation of Ashod Zorian’s disciples.
