أسطورة آيسلندا التأسيسية – التي تفيد بوصول أول مستوطن إسكندنافي، إنجولفر أرنارسون (Ingólfr Arnarson) إلى الموقع المستقبلي لـ ريكيافيك كما صورها يوهان بيتر رادسينغ عام 1850.

أسطورة الأصل تعد أسطورة مفادها وصف أصل بعض ملامح العالم الطبيعي أو الاجتماعي. ومن بين أنواع أسطورة الأصل، نوع الأسطورة الكونية، التي تصف خلق العالم. ومع ذلك، أطلقت بعض الثقافات قصصًا بعد الأسطورة الكونية التي تصف أصل الظواهر الطبيعية والعادات البشرية داخل العالم الموجود مسبقًا.

وفي العلوم الكلاسيكية الغربية، يتم استخدام كلمة (aition) (من اللغة الإغريقية αἴτιον، "سبب") أحيانًا للإشارة إلى أسطورة ما توضح أصل، وخاصةً كيفية مجيء كائن أو عُرف إلى حيز الوجود.
