Foundation New Images Policy

Hi everyone,
I am Yosri from Malay Wikipedia. Recently I was informed by certain parties that MS Wiki need to delete any images tagged as Non-Commercial under Foundation Licensing policy. After I have done some studies, I realised that Wikipedia Foundations is moving towards allowing commercialises all images, as such they are acting on behalf of commercial company to require all images loaded with tagging Non-Commercial in all Wiki Project to be removed, including those loaded in local Wiki. You are only allowed to licenses your images under "free content", which specifically allows commercial reuse, example GDLF 1.2. Certain images is excempted under a very narrow EDP ("exemption doctrine policy") definition. If you all already aware about this, please ignore this comment. Otherwise, for more details please visit http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#Wikimedia_projects_still_using_non-commercial-only_images.3F Yosri (نقاش) 04:54، 2 مارس 2011 (ت ع م)

Books of the Century

Hi Arabic Embassy,
I do not speak Arabic, but I have translated this English book list en:Le Monde's 100 Books of the Century into Arabic.

Can you help me? I would like to know what to call the page in Arabic.
"Le Monde" is the name of the Paris newspaper (لوموند).

Thanks a lot, Varlaam (نقاش) 15:07، 17 مارس 2011 (ت ع م) (Toronto, Canada)

hello Varlaam, the address of the article would be كتب لوموند المائة للقرن.--أبو شلاخ البرمائي (نقاش) 01:43، 19 مارس 2011 (ت ع م)

Thanks very much.
Arabic word order is very different from English, isn't it?
Varlaam (نقاش) 05:08، 22 مارس 2011 (ت ع م)
yes it is, but you can also start your article with this address if you will

100 كتاب من لوموند للقرن.

there is no consensus in this regard, but i think the first one is traditional arabic's style while the second one is modern arabic'style..--أبو شلاخ البرمائي (نقاش) 05:33، 22 مارس 2011 (ت ع م)

ِActually, the order is not so do different as do you think, the phrase in Arabic would be "Books Le Monde 100 of the century". So just the word of "Books" was moved to the first word :) --عباد (نقاش) 14:31، 22 مارس 2011 (ت ع م).

Help needed in communicating with a user on ar.wikipedia

Hi, I can not speak any arabic, but I need to communicate with a user here who is editing some physics articles here on ar.wikipedia, but uploading unnecessary files to commons.wikimedia.org. Is anyone willing to assist me. Perhaps reply on my talk page here or on Commons. Thanks.

:-) --Tony Wills (نقاش) 05:54، 31 مارس 2011 (ت ع م)
I think the case is concerning مستخدم:Latifahphysics, isn't it? I sent her (it seems a feminine name to me) a warning on the discussion page in order to read commons policies and comply with them otherwise her account will be blocked. --سايفرز (نقاشمساهمات) 06:47، 31 مارس 2011 (ت ع م)
Yes. I really wanted to avoid discouraging this user. They have put a bit of work into translating pages and putting them on ar.wikipedia. They are a little in-experienced and there are few things that would help them, and save creating problems. I don't think anything they have done warrants being blocked by anyone though. It would be good to convey all the above to them.
Things they need to know -
1) They have created lots of unnecessary images containing formulas, rather than just copying the math-TeX from the original en-wikipedia article, I tried to explain that on their talk page.
2) Also the filenames for the images they used are a bit minimal (eg "1.png") rather than something more descriptive.
3) They have copied some other files from en.wikipedia without properly showing where the files came from. Someone with a little experience needs to show them how to move images from wikipedia to Commons (it is not as easy as it should be :-).
4) Also there is no need to make ".png" files from ".svg" files to use them, ".svg" files can be used directly in wikipages.
5) I hope they keep contibuting :-) --Tony Wills (نقاش) 07:39، 31 مارس 2011 (ت ع م)
No problem, I can convey to her the above points, we are also interested in this users contributions here on ar.wp, but let's wait first for any response on the first message. --سايفرز (نقاشمساهمات) 00:52، 1 أبريل 2011 (ت ع م)
The user has given no response to any message, and is now uploading scaled down versions of images already on Commons. Just about every action on Commons is wasting other users time. --Tony Wills (نقاش) 08:12، 9 أبريل 2011 (ت ع م)
Commons has its rules, please never hesitate to apply them to anyone! --سايفرز (نقاشمساهمات) 10:13، 9 أبريل 2011 (ت ع م)
Yes, of course the user could of course just be blocked from uploading images to Commons, but that doesn't really help anyone. It will just frustrate the users ability to create useful articles. I have not come here asking anyone to take administrative action against this user, on the contary I am just trying to communicate with this user and show them how to do things properly, rather than doing so many things in ways that are a waste of their time and our time. I am just asking for someone to help explain things, I'm not sure why no one is helping. I could use google or some other automated translation, but I expect it would not be clear enough to be very useful. --Tony Wills (نقاش) 02:34، 11 أبريل 2011 (ت ع م)

Image for sexual abuse stubs

Hi, everybody. I don't know any Arabic. I noticed you use a picture of a Catholic priest as an icon for sexual abuses, which has obviously a strong religious connotation, alien from the theme of sexual abuses itself. Yet that priest is really guilty of several crimes, but adopting his picture is not very neutral. Thank you for your sensitivity

Avemundi (نقاش) 19:36، 8 أبريل 2011 (ت ع م)

The image was replaced with more proper one in قالب:بذرة فضيحة اعتداء جنسي. --سايفرز (نقاشمساهمات) 10:12، 9 أبريل 2011 (ت ع م)

I need technical help for writing a bot

Hi! It is very strange for me to write here because the cursor keeps jumping here and there and characters don't remain on the place where I put them. I am a bot owner in Hungarian Wikipedia, and I am just working on a new bot that creates a table of contents to the archives of a page. See at hu:Szerkesztő:Bináris/TOCbot. Now, I want to make it public for other Wikipedias, but I don't understand right-to-left wikis and I cannot even read here. So, my questions:

  1. When the bot creates a wikitable in the usual way, will you see it right-to-left automatically? So I write the first column first as in other wikis, and it will appear on the right?
  2. Have a look at ويكيبيديا:الميدان/أرشيف/اقتراحات. The archives listed there are real subpages of ويكيبيديا:الميدان/أرشيف/اقتراحات? Please list the order of subpages. For example, at ويكيبيديا:الميدان/أرشيف/اقتراحات/09/2006 is 09 under 2006 or above it?
  3. When writing a bot, does Arabic Wikipedia or any right-to-left wiki need any special treatment?
  4. When I analyze a text with regular expressions, will that work in the same way as in Latin wikis?

If you are interested in using such a bot, I would appreciate the help of a local bot owner, who helps me in testing, and is willing to write me at hu:Szerkesztővita:Bináris/TOCbot where I can properly write. Thank you! Bináris (نقاش) 09:40، 27 أبريل 2011 (ت ع م)

Please try to answer, otherwise I cannot make this bot properly run on your wiki. Thank you. Bináris (نقاش) 23:07، 29 أبريل 2011 (ت ع م)

  • I am not technically literate enough to answer all you questioins, but I'll try to answer what I think I know.
  1. I only know for sure that tables display properly (i.e. right-to-left) without the need to insert any special tags.
  2. The archives listed on the page you mentioned are really subpages of ويكيبيديا:الميدان/أرشيف/اقتراحات (except red links, of course). The archives are created according to the naming rule Wikipedia:VillagePump/Archive/VillagePumpSection/YYYY/MM
  3. The table on the top of page lists archive years, then months. After that the same is listed as a list. In my personal view, the listing (and the tables) should be ordered from most recent to oldest, but this is not currently the case.
  4. Not fully sure about regular expressions. In Arabic there are optional diacritic signs. These signs are characters from the «computer's point of view». Furthermore, some diacritics are considered mandatory but are frequently omitted by those whose spelling skills are suboptimal. Examples are characters U+064B to U+0655 and ligatures U+FC5E to U+FC62 (hope it's useful)
abanima (نقاش) 07:51، 30 أبريل 2011 (ت ع م)

Thank you, this was really useful, and you gave me a good idea with table sort orders. I will make possible a reversed TOC at a later point. Archive names must have some scheme which is really liberal, for example month names will be taken from local خاص:Allmessages. I think the spelling of community archive names should be good and with private archives everyone makes what they want. :-) Diacratical marks are well known in Hungarian, too. :-) Optional characters can be well handled in regular expressions. Bináris (نقاش) 13:43، 30 أبريل 2011 (ت ع م)

I realized there is no point in working with the reverse table order because my tables are in class "wikitable-sortable". Bináris (نقاش) 14:05، 30 أبريل 2011 (ت ع م)
  • Well, good luck! Looking forward to seeing your bot up and working. --abanima (نقاش) 17:04، 30 أبريل 2011 (ت ع م)

Success! Now I am able to iterate the archives. It was really a task. :-) See user:Bináris/TOCbot/Archive name patterns. I think it will work. :-) Bináris (نقاش) 06:05، 5 مايو 2011 (ت ع م)

  • Glad to hear that> But please note that Arabic Village Pump has seven sections: اقتراحات - أخبار - سياسات - منوعات - مساعدة - تقنية - لغويات each with a monthly archive. --abanima (نقاش) 08:11، 5 مايو 2011 (ت ع م)

Yes, I know that. This was only an experiment to reproduce an example pattern; after the bot will be published, a local bot owner has to make the config page and run the script. It will be good for any community page in the first phase, and for personal talk pages later. I feel like the prince in the tales after triumphing over the dragon, because I cannot read a letter here and I can hardly write. :-)) Bináris (نقاش) 09:54، 5 مايو 2011 (ت ع م)

Hello Bináris. I run on of the most active bots on ar.wp using مستخدم:CipherBot. I am really glad to know that you have programmed a bot for archiving the village pump, since i was personally interested in making one but was busy with programming more necessary bots recently. Abanima did also made a great technical help apparently. If you are interested to test run the bot locally i am glad to help. you could publish the code in some subpage of your user domain here, or contact me over email to receive the code file. I am looking forward your contact. --سايفرز (نقاشمساهمات) 13:20، 5 مايو 2011 (ت ع م)

That is great! The code will soon be public, and I will need beta testers, so I let you know about it. Bináris (نقاش) 13:59، 5 مايو 2011 (ت ع م)

It does not archive the pages, since there is ona written by Misza13, it is already in Pywikipedia. My bot creates the table of contents from archived pages. Bináris (نقاش) 14:01، 5 مايو 2011 (ت ع م)

Ali Divandari: علی دیواندری

Hello, I want to creat a page for Ali Divandari, Iranian cartoonist who has awarded in many festivals. طيران الشرق الأوسط

Hey. guys. I updated MEA's link to its Arabic webpage, but now the Wikipedian article itself needs to be revised. Any chance you know anyone who'd help look into it? Thanks.

Hatem's first name

The article جورج حاتم points out جورج شفيق حاتم's first name to be جورج, but this is definitely not a name of Arabic origin. Could anyone tell me his Arabic name in Lebanese tradition? 虞海 (نقاش) 14:53، 6 أكتوبر 2011 (ت ع م)

Also, can any tell me his name in ISO 233 transliteration and in Lebanese Arabic? 虞海 (نقاش) 15:17، 6 أكتوبر 2011 (ت ع م)
جورج is Arabic for George, a name widely used by Christians in the Arab world. --Meno25 (نقاش) 16:57، 6 أكتوبر 2011 (ت ع م)
Thanks! I noted that جورجis George, but I've heard someone said that that's not his original first name, but an Americanization of his first name. Plus, this does not seems to be Arabic naming tradition - “Proper name-Father's name-Grandpa's name-Nationality”. 虞海 (نقاش) 15:14، 7 أكتوبر 2011 (ت ع م)
Christians in the Arab World do use the the name George. Here is another example of a pure Arab with this name. Depending on the dialect, it can be pronounced close to English (/d͡ʒord͡ʒ/) or close to French (/ʒorʒ/). The comrade was born in the United States, so he is probably /d͡ʒord͡ʒ/. In the country of his ancestors, Lebanon, they would pronounce him as /ʒorʒ/. --abanima (نقاش) 15:49، 7 أكتوبر 2011 (ت ع م)
So his name is George bin-Nahoum bin-Salaama al-Hatem? Is Shafick his Laqab? 虞海 (نقاش) 09:07، 8 أكتوبر 2011 (ت ع م)
As far as I can judge, he has two forenames, George and Shafick. His family name (the name he shares with his ancestors) is Hatem. His father's name, according to English Wikipedia was Nahoum Salaama Hatem (again, Hatem is the family name). The proper naming conventions of Medieval Arabic are not followed in Lebanon, so, to the best of my knowledge, the family name in Lebanon and Syria may be called Kunya, Nisba, Shuhra, sometimes Laqab, while they all refer to the same. You can treat his name with confifdence as you would treat any Westen European/North American name. It can be said the that George Shafick (or Shafick George, acccording to EnWiki) are his first and middle names, and Hatem is his surname (of family name). --abanima (نقاش) 13:38، 8 أكتوبر 2011 (ت ع م)
So, George and Shafick are both ism? 虞海 (نقاش) 15:39، 8 أكتوبر 2011 (ت ع م)
Yes, both are ism. Or, rather, his ism is George Shafick, sometimes called ism murakkab, or combined name. --abanima (نقاش) 16:24، 8 أكتوبر 2011 (ت ع م)

Language support group for Arabic

The Wikimedia Foundation has brought together a new team of developers who are dedicated to language support. This team is to support all the languages and consequently it is not realistic to expect that the team members can provide proper support for your language. It is for this reason that we are looking for volunteers who will make up a language support team.

This language support team will be asked to provide us with information about their language. Such information may need to be provided either to us or on a website that we will indicate to you. Another activity will be to test software that will likely have an effect on the running of the MediaWiki software. We are looking for people who clearly identify their ability. Formal knowledge is definitely appreciated.

As much of the activity will be concentrated on translatewiki.net, it will be a plus when team members know how to localise at translatewiki.net. Thanks, Gmeijssen (نقاش) 05:08، 15 أكتوبر 2011 (ت ع م))

Satar Jabar

As an FYI, please see en:Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Satar_Jabar

There was an article in Arabic, ستار جبار, that was created as a translation of the English article. As per AFD the English article was merged into en:Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse - Those of you who edit AR may consider creating an article on the prisoner abuse and redirecting Satar Jabar there...
